In this episode:

  • VANITIES is set to open in previews at Second Stage on July 2nd. Producers Randy Adams and Sue Frost of Junkyard Dog Productions stop by the studio to talk about the shows twisty history to the New York  stage and share two of David Kirshenbaum’s songs from the show.
  • Broadway Abridged Live! is back on Broadway Bullet, this time skewering LITTLE MERMAID. Writer Gil Varod tackles getting those long Broadway Shows down to a digestible length on his website, Broadway Abridged, and every once and a while we bring a script to life in our studio.  Featuring the voice talents of Rachel Pincus, Randall Meehl, Stephen Olander and Jaclyn Huberman. Also,  for those of you who missed his hysterical take on the 2009 Tony Awards, you can still catch it HERE.
  • Jenna Esposito is coming up in the New York Cabaret Scene. She opens her new cabaret show, JENNA ESPOSITO SINGS CONNIE FRANCIS on June 26th, and recently released her debut CD,  13 MEN…AND ME.   • On July 8th EBE Ensemble is launching their new show, PRE-DISPOSAL,  savage comedy about race, terror in all its forms, and the role of art in a world that has all but usurped dissent. Director Joshua Luria and Actor/cp-managing director Joe Mullen stop by to discuss the project and theatre company.

Podcast Vol. 315: June 11, 2009 – Planet Connections Festivity Special Episode

In this Episode we talk with seven of the shows involved with the Planet Connections Festivity running from June 9th – June 28th. Find out more information on their website at www.planetconnectionsfestivity.com Interviews in this episode are:

  • We talk with Tony Asaro (Composer/Lyricist) and Justin Utley (Lead Actor) from the new country-themed musical, OUR COUNTRY, where a country superstar is outed and rises from the ashes with an all gay band. We also play two songs from the show’s demo.
  • We talk with playwright John Kearns and lead actresses Amy Chang and Joy Lanceta about the show, RESIGNATIONS, which discusses satisfactiction in the workplace. We get sidelined a little bit by discussing the growth of roles for Asian-American actors.
  • HOUND is a rethinking of the Sherlock Holmes cannon from the point of view of Watson. The show has been imported from Louisiana, and we talk with playwright, John Patrick Bray and actor Blain Peltier about the show and the trials of a temporary move to New York City.
  • CLEOPATRA: A LIFE UNPARALLELED is a new rock musical. Rich Labbadia (Producer) and Melissa Labbadia (Cleopatra) talk about the development of the show and the trials of working with family. Also, Melissa Labbadia, Jessica Labbadia and Joshua Woodie sing three songs from the show live in our studio!
  • Dorothy Parker’s story has been told many times, but not so much her stories. Playwright Maureen VanTrease and Third Eye Theatre Artistic Director, Michael Levesque attempt to remedy that situation with THOSE WHISTLING LADS, a show that puts five of Dorothy Parker’s Stories/Poems on stage.
  • WAIT OF THE WORLD is a unique multi-media presentation/play that discusses many of our fears of the future and pulls from the past. writer Peter Dagger and Director Jeremy Bloom stop by to discuss what makes their show tick.
  • There is no question that Americans have become more and more dependent on prescription medication this past two decades. NY IT Award winning playwright Aliza Shane addresses this in humorous was in a modern adaptation of Moliere,  THE IMAGINARY INVALID: BY PRESCRIPTION ONLY, which she also produces and directs.
