Find out more about NYMF at www.nymf.org

In this episode:

Gary Holmes discusses his journey bringing 30′s Harlem Composer J.C. Johnson’s music to life in a book musical, TRAV’LIN. A mentor to Gary as a young boy, J.C. wish was to have an honest book musical, now brought to life at NYMF.

Book writer, Chip Zien and Director Nick Corley discuss their (tongue firmly in cheek) desire to have the “most pretentious musical” at NYMF this year. A unique a surreal journey of a 12 year old boy with no regards to the boundaries of time, THE HISTORY OF WAR illuminates the human capacity for violence.

Ned Massey was prepped by labels to be the “Next Bob Dylan” only to find himself scrapped by the label before his debut album was released. Years later, he turns his story into a fresh contemporary musical, BLOOD TIES. He discusses the show with director Scott C. Embler.

The downturn in the economy led to Keith Varney getting fired from his office job, which quickly led to the writing of I GOT FIRED: A SEMI-AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SORT-OF-TRUE REVENGE MUSICAL. He discusses the creation of the show and the challenges of writing and acting at the same time.

In this episode:

We let you hear James Barbour‘s new single, WALK WITH ME. He recorded the single for Haiti Relief, and it was produced by your host, Michael Gilboe and written by Gary Burton. Make sure you pick up the single at iTunes or Amazon to support a good cause!

Clare Burt has been a big star on the West End for over a decade, and she is making her New York debut with her cabaret show, NOW YOU KNOW March 9-13. She stopped by the studio to discuss her show, her upcoming CD release and her career on the West End!

+30 NYC is a collection of shows envisioning New York City in the future. Staged as a benefit for Materials for the Arts, Artistic Director Melanie Moyer Williams and show curator Dominic D’Andrea pop in to tell us about the show and how they pulled it all together.

Set against the backdrop of WWII, SIGNS OF LIFE is a new musical from AMAS telling the story of nine Jews in a “model” concentration camp. The show has been receiving great notices for how it handles it’s dark subject, and one of the lead actresses, Patricia Noonan, came by to tell us more about the show and the real life inspiration.

A surreal coming of age story for a young London girl, HANGMAN SCHOOL FOR GIRLS tells a universal story in a fresh manner. Writer/Actor Lucy Gillespie and Director Leta Tremblay were here to talk about the show and it’s staging challenges. Also check out the production blog!

Monologist Frank Blocker is back with his new show, FEARLESS MORAL INVENTORY.
In this episode:

Diana DeGarmo (American Idol) stops by to talk about her new show, THE TOXIC AVENGER, as well as her experience during and after American Idol. We also play a song from the Original Cast Recording of the show.

Gallery Players have won best production of a musical at the NY IT awards for 3 years in a row now, and they are gunning to extend their run with their new production of TOP OF THE HEAP. Director Neal Freeman stops by with Composer Jeffrey Lodin and Book/Lyric Writer, William Squier to talk about the show. Actors Kenny Wade Marshall, David Perlman and Hollis Scarborough also came by to sing two songs from the show live in our Times Square Studio.

Music from the recession era gets another spin in New York as the musical revue, BROTHER, CAN YOU SPARE A DIME? sets up for a run at the Triad Theatre. Director/Writer/Conceiver Bill Daugherty and Producer Max Weintraub give us the low-down on the 1920′s low-down, and discuss how they brought the show to life.

Steve Hayes has been a staple on the New York Cabaret scence for over twenty years, and explores his passion for the comedy teams of the 60′s in his new two-man show, STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES. He explains his new take on the Gay Man/Straight Man schtick, and also discusses the gentrification of the Cabaret scene in New York over the past twenty years, and tells us where to find it’s gritty roots being reinvigorated. He also talks about his new YOUTUBE series.
